    Rock Climbing - John Willard

My rock guiding and personal kit

John Willard's expert gear recommendations on Rendezvu

    Products in this list

    • Katana Lace by La Sportiva — These are my go-to for sport climbs. By far some of the comfiest shoes I've worn. I tend to rock these for sport or crack climbs or climbs that demand hard edging. I wear 43.5 and they fit loosely. If you want to have a send shoe in this, I would suggest sizing a half size down.
    • TC Pro by La Sportiva — This is my go-to shoe for long trad climbs, slab climbs, or crack climbs. This shoe is not only comfortable but also is a slab & crack machine! I size to my street shoes personally to be comfy, these will stretch a tiny bit as a fair warning!
    • Petzl Sirocco Climbing Helmet White S/M by Petzl
    • Arc'teryx Men's AR-395a Harness Green L by Arc'teryx
    • Petzl Ange Finesse L/L Quickdraw Set White 17 Cm by Petzl
    • Mountain Radio by Rocky Talkie — A must have for multi pitch rock climbing!
    • Garmin inReach Mini 2 Black by Garmin — A must have for any outdoor activity. This is my preferred GPS and SOS device. Please add this to your kit ASAP if you frequently go to places that don't have service. A MUST HAVE!
    • Speed 40 Backpack by Black Diamond
    • Blitz 20 Backpack by Black Diamond
    • Trango Beta Stick Evo Stick Clip Black by Trango — My go-to stick clip. I like how much length you get to clip high bolts. I've been able to fit this into my checked bag for my climbing trips in UT, WA, NV, and even flying to Chamonix.
    • Petzl GRIGRI Belay Device Red by Petzl
    • Totem Cam by Totem MT — I got a single rack of the black totem to the green (.2-.75 for BD sizing) and I love these things. They are a staple in my collection of cams. I don't like the #1 or #2 as the stems are too flimsy for my liking.
    • Black Diamond Camalot Z4 Cam 0.75 by Black Diamond — These are my cams of choice for small cams. I have a full double rack of these and I really love the sizing & color matches for my brain to know what cam I have. The smaller heads and flexible stem are a huge pro.
    • C.A.M.P. Nano 22 Rack Pack Multi-Colored by Camp
    • Petzl Freino Autolocking Carabiner by Petzl
    • Petzl Attache Bar Carabiner Black by Petzl — These are not only lightweight but stylish! They work extremely well and are worth a few extra bucks per locker. These are the gold standard of carabiners and my go-tos.
